Krikstonys Sacral Complex

Krikštonys parish was established in 1925. In the interest of Seirijai Pastor Juozas Grajauskas, from the parceling Manor of Zaleskovcizna the parish received 8 ha of land for the church and presbytery buildings and 2 ha for the cemetery. The initiator of the sacral Krikstonys parish center, built in 1926 – 1949, and the main organized of construction and architectural works was priest, historian, ethnographer of Dzukija and Suduva, Jonas Reitelaitis (1884 – 1966). In 1926, temporary buildings were built – wooden presbytery and a church. At the same time, the construction of a stone church was happening and the works were finished in 1935. The Stone Church of the Christ King – an interesting fragment from the inter-war period of Lithuanian architecture. It was the only church at that time which was projected and built by the priest, despite the fact that he did not have required education. Unique building’s plastic was created by relating the tendencies of the nation and professional architecture. The author originally interpreted neo-Ghotic forms, also used national style elements which were popular at that time period.
